By using a fleet of smaller, lower-orbit, and lower-cost satellites, companies such as SpaceX and OneWeb are looking to bring 5G internet to areas where broadband/cable is not terrestrially feasible. To keep costs down, companies are looking to consolidate the building and launching of satellites, which were two previously separate functions. These companies also have an incentive to get it done quickly as the FCC regulates commercial satellites on a first-come, first-serve basis. Therefore the first movers are likely to obtain a large market share and get a leg up in the important 5G race.
